Kentucky homeowners encounter a wide variety of pests within their homes. Each species poses a different problem and requires different treatment for elimination. In order to better understand what pests you might be facing, below are some of the more common household pests found in your state.
As with most of the United States, ants are a significant problem in Kentucky. There are a wide variety of ant species in this state, but a few of the more common ones should be noted. Carpenter ants are very prevalent in Kansas and are not only a nuisance, but can also cause structural damage to your home. These insects burrow into wood to make their nests, but the damage is usually done on the inside of the wood and the only evidence of their existence is piles of sawdust that they leave. The acrobat ant is also common in Kansas and when threatened can emit an unpleasant odor. The little black ant and the thief ant are also common to the region and feed on a range of items including meat, dairy products and fruits or vegetables. Most of these species prefer the outdoors but may end up in your home either accidentally or seeking shelter from cold or warm temperatures.
Another common, Kentucky household invader is spiders. Many different types of spiders can be found in Kentucky, most of which are harmless. One common invader is the wolf spider. These large, hairy arachnids are not poisonous, but they have a slight resemblance to a tarantula and can therefore be very frightening to encounter. Even though they are not poisonous, they can still occasionally bite and are generally very unpleasant to have in your home.
Of the many species of spiders you are likely to encounter in Kentucky, there are three, of which you should be very cautious; the black widow, the brown recluse and the scorpion. Though these spiders are not, by nature, aggressive toward humans, if bitten by any of these spiders, you may need to seek medical treatment. Black widow spiders are, according to their name, black with a unique red hourglass shape on their abdomen. Brown recluse spiders can vary in color from cream to dark brown. Their distinguishing feature is a violin-shaped marking on their back. While brown recluse spiders will seek shelter indoors, the black widow prefers the outdoors, but can often end up in garages, sheds or basements. Most people only associate scorpions with exotic places and unusual climates, but the southern devil scorpion has been found in many areas of Kentucky. These creatures feed on insects and mostly remain outdoors, but sometimes enter the home during the late spring and early summer months. They will only sting if threatened and the venom will result in a painful or numbing sensation. Regardless of how or why they entered your home, no one wants to encounter these pests, which is why Terminix offers treatment services to keep your home safe and pest-free.
One of the pests Kentucky homeowners should pay very close attention to is the subterranean termite. These termites feed on wood cellulose, which is in the interior part of a wooden structure. This is especially problematic because the damage is inside the wood and cannot be easily seen. Often, by the time termites are discovered they have already done thousands of dollars in damage. Wooden foundation under your house, floorboards, and trim are all commonly attacked by these termites. Identifying termites can also be difficult because they look very similar to some ant species.
These are just a few of the pests found in Kentucky. Cockroaches, bed bugs, beetles, and rodents are also common in this state. No matter what kind of pest problem you are facing, Terminix offers safe, effective solutions for your home.
